South African comedian Robby Collins is set to join a star-studded line-up when he performs at the New York Comedy Festival next month. Robby (35) told YOU that he got the call inviting him to join the festival last week.
“I am excited!
“I spent four months in New York and [before that] I lived out of a suitcase for the past eight months where I told myself I was going to travel and give my all to this thing. So I spent four months there, which was great, and from that I was asked to come back to do the New York Comedy Fest.”
Robby earned an Emmy nomination for his writing on Late Night News with Loyiso Gola.
He tells YOU he hasn’t yet finalised his set for the festival, but he’s working on it.
“I’m just trying to fine-tune everything and make sure it’s ready for that audience. They [Americans] laugh at the same things we laugh at but it’s just the small references that need to be changed. For instance, what we’d call a trolley they’d call a shopping cart,” he says.
“You just have to change those small things to make sure they understand.
“Another thing is that people don’t understand our South African accent. When they [Americans] think of South Africa, they think of the Nigerian accent and when people ask me if I’m from Australia, I’m left confused,” he says.
