Trevor Noah knows when he’s saying goodbye to The Daily Show. Paramount Global announced that the comedian and Daily Show host will say farewell to the late night program on December 8th. During Noah’s last week, the Daily Show will feature a look back at some of his greatest moments from his seven-year tenure manning the desk.
Noah announced he was leaving The Daily Show on September 29th, shocking both audiences and colleagues alike with the news. After Noah’s departure, The Daily Show will take a hiatus for the rest of the year and return on Tuesday, January 17 with rotating set of hosts. Whether that will include any of Noah’s Daily Show correspondents—Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Desi Lydic, Dulcé Sloan, Lewis Black, Jordan Klepper or Roy Wood Jr.—is as of yet unclear.
As for who will permanently host The Daily Show, that too remains up in the air. With Late Late Show host James Corden also leaving his late night post in the coming year and former Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee‘s show Full Frontal getting cancelled, the late night television landscape is facing a series of shakeups that make choosing a Daily Show host perhaps a more fraught task filling the desk than it was when Jon Stewart stepped away in 2015.
“If you want to do it to its highest excellence, which I think Trevor did, it’s a sole focus,” said Stewart to VF regarding Noah’s decision to step away from The Daily Show. “He’s an incredibly creative and varied performer. Going on the road, producing, writing, all those things—there’s no way you could achieve both and have them live up to the standards that I’m sure he sets for himself.”
