The Savanna Comics Choice Awards 2024, truth be told was a world-class production, from the stage set up, the design, look and feel were on point it reminded me of the golden Years of the awards. Oh, not forgetting the host and man of the moment Mpho Popps was right on the money with joke after joke entertaining the audience. During the show I was sitting next to some dude at the back, he was crying with laughter because of Mpho’s delivery of jokes.
The Comics Choice Awards is doing a great job of putting a spotlight and raising the profile of these comedians however these young comedians and established comics need to take responsibility and accountability to build their careers take their brands to another level and make the world laugh instead of sitting here at home.
As I mentioned before, the South African Comedy industry is like cricket in Mzansi we produce good cricket players in this case good comedians however, we don’t have job opportunities for them. All the 20 comics that came through a New Comer category over the years where are they TODAY, some are still in the industry trying their luck while some have given up already… because we all know that entertainment is not easy, it is tough while some call it it’s a cut-throat industry.
Trevor Noah, a comedy pioneer, global star and television host created a blueprint on how to become a global phenomenon and star but for some reason, comedians are failing to copy or follow that path of success and reach greater heights.
The formula for success or to make progress in one person’s career is out there in black and white, Trevor and Black Coffee created that recipe for success but most South Africans in the arts are scared to follow that blueprint and become big and successful in their respective careers, instead they play politics, hate people that are successful and making moves for no reason.
