South African comedy legend David Kau took to social media in an Open Letter asking for a meeting with Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. Kau wants to talk to the minister about some of the issues that affect comedians and the comedy sector in general. McKenzie has met several people and organisations that form part of his portfolio, however, he hasn’t reached out to the comedy sector yet stated David.
We’re very hopeful that the honourable minister will eventually make time to meet with David and address the issues at hand that affect our comedy industry. Think about it, when these comedians succeed on the world stage, the government does take credit. It makes sense for the minister to come to the party and meet with comedy industry leaders to address issues that affect these comedians on a day-to-day basis such as availability of venues, support and funding to take their careers to another level.

“Do we have to be in the Olympics or die before we Stand up Comedians can meet you @GaytonMcK? We know we’re not recognized or there’s no category for us although we have employed hundreds of people without any government Assisstance but would appreciate a meeting please. Please advice who to contact to have a meeting with you. I will go on a run walk with you and spin cars – whatever it takes. Guys pls RT until Minister replies.”
“I would love to engage you all but the Minister or his spokesperson and department will reply. Minister Zizi met with everyone in art n culture except the Comedy sector. We’ve been and I use ‘We’ lightly, those who know know. We know this comedy industry is here purely based on skill and ordinary South Africans buying tickets. Even corporate sponsorship for comedy doesn’t develop any talent, some of the sponsors pick and choose what they like based on their brands, not based on talent development. I’ve already spent my money doing what government does for most Sports and Culture codes, if you don’t understand that that’s also ok.
“By the way I have asked and spoken to Minister here more than once, as he does speak a lot on other things on this platform so this is not my first request or approach. Maybe that wasn’t clear to some of you. I appreciate those that have helped and RT. Other expert comments I will keep in mind next time.”
