Comedian Marlon Wayans said his child now identifies as transgender, a change which he plans to incorporate into his comedy routine.
The 51-year-old performer made the comments during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club” on Friday. “I have a daughter that transitioned into a son,” Wayans said. “My daughter Amai is now Kai.”
He said a future comedy special on the topic could be called “Rainbow Child.”
“My transition as a parent, going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance,” the “White Chicks” actor added.
“I think there’s a lot of parents out there who need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it,” Wayans said, noting how creating the special has been “a very painful situation for me, but it’s one of the best, funniest hours [of comedy] I could ever imagine.”
Wayans went on to describe Kai as “brilliant” and “the most well-read, the smartest Wayans.” The actor also has a son Shawn, 21, with ex-wife Angelica Zachary.
“They know I love them,” the comedian said of his child, who is 23. “They see me trying, and I’m happy, but I have to respect their wishes.”
“I want them to be free in spirit, free in thought, free to be themselves. The more you know yourself, the more you can govern yourself; the more you live your truth, the happier your existence,” Wayans said. “If they can’t get that in the household with their father and their mother, how the f*** do I send them out into the world with that kind of confidence? I’m just so proud of them being them.”
Despite a Gallup poll which found that only 0.6% of the 5.6% of Americans who identify as LGBTQ are trans, the number of trans-identified individuals in Hollywood is significant. Jamie Lee Curtis, Charlize Theron, Cynthia Nixon, Cher, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, plus Warren Beatty and Annette Bening all have children who identify as trans.
There are also several celebrities who identify as transgender. Elliot Page is one famous person who publicly “transitioned,” as is reality star Jazz Jennings.
