The longest-running prime-time series in TV history, The Simpsons, will extend its record for at least two more years. Fox ordered two more seasons of The Simpsons, locking in the animated series through the end of Season 34 in 2023 and bringing its run to a total of 757 episodes.
Between the lines
The Simpsons, which debuted in 1989, is already the longest-running prime-time scripted show in television history—breaking Gunsmoke’s previous record of 635 episodes back in Season 29—and Seasons 33 and 34 will only extend that record. “Woo Hoo! With any luck the show will soon be older than I am,” said Homer Simpson in a statement.
Fox last renewed The Simpsons for two seasons in 2019, following speculation the series may be moved to ABC after Disney finalized its $71.3 billion purchase of most of 21st Century Fox’s assets, including the studio that produces the show. As was the case two years ago, the renewal helped put those question to rest—at least until Season 35 looms.
Bottom line
The renewal ensures that The Simpsons will continue anchoring Fox’s Sunday night Animation Domination lineup for at least two more years. The show continues to draw audiences even in Season 32: It averages 7 million viewers across all platforms.
