South African ventriloquist and award-winning performer Conrad Koch will showcase his latest offering ‘Puppet Guy’ in Johannesburg next week. Joined by Chester Missing, Koch spoke to Eusebius McKaiser about how his material has evolved over the years and why it took him at least three years to write the show. He will soon be travelling to Canada and Australia.
“A lot of my material, in fact when I was using Chester as black guy talking to a white guy, the theme was deconstructing race while pointing out the legacy of apartheid and privilege – versus now, it is more about dealing with fun jokes and creating a warm space for all types of identities, and less about lecturing people but still with that consciousness.”
