South African comedy is growing in a rapid pace, what I mean is that local comedians lately are able to sell out shows at the box office and most of them smile all the way to the bank. While some CRITICS argue that they perform at small venues and so forth however thats not the point.
If you can look back, ten years ago this is just a far cry and I believe as comedy family or industry we need to smell roses and celebrate this mile stones because it’s a huge reward and blessing beyond a stretch of imagination. I have been noticing this trend since the beginning of the year and the past few months.
Last month comic legend John Vlismas managed to sell out with Revelations II, followed by David Kau with Blacks Only and the past weekend Loyiso Madinga sold out with Free-ish show at the Goliath Comedy Club, while Loyiso Gola sold out as well in New York.
Now Schalk Bezuidenhout is on tour with Second Language, he will be performing in Johannesburg in November however his second and third show is already sold out at the box office. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think our boys and girls are doing exceptionally well and it need to be celebrated and cheered.
