Comedian David Kau has apologised to sport, arts and culture minister Gayton McKenzie after accusing him of neglecting comedians in the entertainment industry.
The controversy began when David took to X to express concerns about the alleged lack of support for comedians by the department. He claimed the minister was only focused on supporting athletes.
“Do we have to be in the Olympics or die before stand-up comedians can meet you, McKenzie? We know we’re not recognised, or there’s no category for us, though we have employed hundreds of people without any government assistance, but we would appreciate a meeting. Please advise who to contact to have a meeting with you. I will go on a run, walk with you, and spin cars — whatever it takes,” David said.
The minister was not impressed with David’s approach used to express his grievances, he dismissed the claims, saying he had attended every comedy show David hosted.
After the minister’s response, David acknowledged his error and issued an apology on social media. He also acknowledged the minister’s commitment to supporting creatives .
“Dear minister Gayton McKenzie, I apologise unreservedly to you. I could have and should have used a better approach to bring up whatever issues the comedy industry is facing and follow the right channels. I did not mean to insinuate or give the wrong and negative impression about your role.
“The proof of the work you have done in such a short space of time is there for people to see. Whatever issues we may have in the comedy industry can wait as there are more pressing issues, and we trust you will do your best to support [us] all .
“I’m embarrassed to have caused you such unnecessary negativity. Please accept my apology.”
The minister accepted the funny man’s apology.
“Thanks for apologising. I have the utmost love and respect for you and your craft. I’m excited about the changes we will bring about with the help of people like you who have passion and compassion for comedians. Apology accepted wholeheartedly. Let’s make magic.”
