The new year is here already and a number of people has been asking themselves, what does 2021 have in store for them. Yes, I don’t have the crystal balls to give you the exact answer however it’s fair to say… it is going to be a challenging year for most people let alone comedy industry as the majority of people and the rest of the world is faced with a deadly pandemic, COVID19.
The virus has made it difficult to do business and it has forced most companies to cut back and some to freeze budgets. Everyone is playing wait and see game as the pandemic continues to ravage the world and it doesn’t seem to stop anytime soon. The same thing can be said about the South African comedy industry and the arts in general… there’s no shows, gigs or touring opportunities for comedians, given the lockdown or COVID19 restrictions and you can’t plan your life with such conditions.
The traditional ways of making money doesn’t cut it anymore. Comedians need to find alternative ways to be profitable or outlets to perform and engage with their audiences. Hopefully along the way they can monetise those platforms to generate income and revenue streams in order to sustain themselves and their respective families.
Despite the current challenges, the situations provide a golden opportunity for comedians and creatives at large to start creating content and not only that… they must find ways to monetise their creative work and grow their fan base.
Those who are lazy to create content, it is going to be difficult for them to survive as these challenging times are here to stay a bit longer. The evidence is everywhere to see… even our government is struggling to contain this virus or get vaccines for that matter to save the nation from this deadly disease called Coronavirus.
