Pearl Thusi’s Queen Sono has been cancelled. Netflix’s first African original series will not be returning for Season 2 due to production challenges related to Covid-19. The series had been given a go-ahead to shoot another season a few months back but Netflix has now decided to pull the plug on it due to the current “trying times”.
The first season of the epic series was shot in different locations across Africa, including South Africa, Nigeria and Zanzibar, among others. The creator and director of the show Kagiso Lediga confirmed that Season 2 of the series, which follows a well-trained spy played by Pearl Thusi, has been cancelled.
Kagiso told Channel24:
“We wrote a beautiful story that spanned the continent but unfortunately could not be executed in these trying times.”
The publication reports that a Netflix spokesperson also confirmed that the production of Season 2 of the series has been halted.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with Season 2 of Queen Sono.”
Kagiso took to Twitter on Thursday, 26 November to let his fans know that the show has been “another casualty” of 2020.

He wrote: “Another casualty of 2020. Thank you to all the fans and awesome team behind Queen Sono for the magic.”
