South African Comedy Industry growth that we saw in 2019 has taken a quick turn due to Coved19/CoronaVirus. This move has cut the income of comedians and people who work in this sector into zero. The situation is getting worse and has created a lot of anxiety amongst comedians and the comedy industry at large. Our industry desperately in need of cash injection of some sort to stimulates this sector, get it going. I don’t know who’s going to be the messiah and save the comedy industry.
Lately, I have been monitoring the news to see what the economics are saying about the economic state of the country unfortunately they paint a gloomy picture and there’s no a shred of light of economic growth on the horizon or coming anytime soon. We saw many comedians and events organisers try to move their comedy events online but that hasn’t taken off yet in terms of revenue generation and growth. Comedy can’t take place without an audience, in fact, what’s comedy without an audience.
The South African government has introduced a stimulus package intending to give the economy a boost however that stimulus has not yielded any fruits yet and we don’t know anyone who received the cash. The industry was expecting to hear from the Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthetwa about his plans for the arts, unfortunately, his clueless and he doesn’t know what his department is doing.
