“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world today.” Nelson Mandela
With #feesmustfall still fresh in our minds, there is a growing concern around what opportunities will exist in the future economy for the youth of South Africa. In Q2 2016 Statistics South Africa released their Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealing 31.2% of the youth between 15-24 were not in employment, education or training (NEET). With this as our reality, it is difficult to be hopeful.
In the background, there are individuals who refuse to allow the fires of hope to die. They dedicate their time to building a better future. One of these organisations is CareerBuild. CareerBuild was established in 2007 when Carole Craggs, a recruiter, recognised how unprepared the youth from disadvantaged backgrounds were to enter the labour market.
CareerBuild’s first project was in 2007, so 2017 marks a decade of successfully run coaching programmes in townships including Alexandra, Eldorado Park, Ivory Park, Ebony Park, Tshepisong, Soweto, Middelburg, Atteridgeville, Nyakallong, Lydenburg, Zandspruit and Rustenburg, changing the lives of young adults between the ages of 17 – 25. To date around 3000 young adults have successfully completed the 5 week programme with a new found belief in their own purpose and talent. Many have gone on to study, find employment and start their own businesses.
CareerBuild is an NPO and therefore runs wholly on financial support from organisations and individuals.
This year they will host a Comedy Show on Friday 21st April 2017 at Sco Bono, Newtown starting at 7pm. The show will feature Kedibone Mulaudzi, Syhayl Essa, Thabiso Mhlongo and Ryan Whittal. Tickets are R175 or R200 including a bunny chow. There will be a raffle and auction.
